New Wing for the Tacoma Art Museum
Tacoma Art Museum is the proud recipient of a major donation by Erivan and Helga Haub and family of 280 major works of American Western Art along with a contribution for a new 10,000 square foot wing to house the collection as well as endowment funds for the care of the collection. The new wing will be designed by award-winning architect Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects; Olson Kundig Architects is also leading the museum’s plaza redesign project. This will be Tom Kundig’s first completed museum project, set to open in 2014.
New Healthcare Facility for the Hilltop
Community Health Care is constructing a new three-story, 54,000-square-foot building in the heart of the Hilltop neighborhood on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The $23 million healthcare facility will feature an urgent care clinic, medical and dental offices, labs, as well as a medical residency program for 18 resident doctors. The Hilltop Regional Health Center will employ 130 full-time staff and is expected to serve over 200 patients on a daily basis. Opening is set for Spring 2012.
Waterfront Museum getting a New Look
The Foss Waterway Seaport, a maritime museum located along the Thea Foss Waterway, will be getting a facelift in 2012 thanks to help from the City of Tacoma and private donations. The $2 million project will seismically retrofit the building and replace the existing brick façade with a dramatic wall of glass. The Seaport will continue to host boat-building exhibits, educational programs, a marine science station and event facility. Completion is set for Summer 2012.
McMenamins to Transform Historic Elks Temple
McMenamins, the Pacific Northwest’s leading brewpub-hotel operator, is coming to Tacoma! McMenamins has won numerous design awards for its innovative renovation of historical buildings. In 2012, McMenamins will be breaking ground to transform the historic downtown Elks Temple into a 56-room hotel and entertainment venue. With a brew pub, theater, movie house, meeting rooms and swimming pool planned for the space, McMenamins Elk Temple will be a welcome addition to Downtown Tacoma! Scheduled to open Spring 2013.
Tacoma Mountaineers Renovate Clubhouse in Old Town
After 55 years of service, the Tacoma Mountaineers Clubhouse is undergoing a substantial reconstruction into a two story building with meeting rooms, a bookstore and larger kitchen facilities. Scheduled to reopen in early Summer 2012 in time to celebrate 100 years in Tacoma.
Children’s Museum of Tacoma Great for Kids (and adults too)
The beloved Children’s Museum of Tacoma has expanded into a new, larger 8,000-square-foot space on Pacific Avenue in downtown Tacoma. The $7 million dollar project features a cascading water display, art studio for budding artists, a whimsical ship for imaginary play and lots of natural light and space for kids to run and explore. Opened January 2012.
Pacific Sports Center coming to South Tacoma
The Pacific Sports Center, a new 52,000-square-feet sports facility is set to open in South Tacoma this Spring 2012. Located at South 80th and South Pine Streets,the new facility will provide a venue for soccer, lacrosse, football and baseball, as well as other sports. Athletes and their fans will enjoy modern amenities and an expanded array of services. Owner Marian Bowers is excited to see the expansion take shape and bring new activity to South Tacoma.
World-Class LeMay Car Museum
Everyone is buzzing about the grand opening of the LeMay-America’s Car Museum (ACM). Located on nine acres next to the Tacoma Dome, the $100 million museum complex will showcase over 500 cars, trucks and motorcycles from the LeMay family, said to have the largest antique & vintage vehicle collection in the world. With 425,000 visitors expected annually and its diverse offerings of dining, retail and entertainment space, the ACM will no doubt become a world-class destination in the Pacific Northwest. Opening June 2, 2012.
